About Us and Our Berners.....
Baby Bear Bernese is located in Northern California, right on the Oregon border. We are settled in between the beautiful pacific ocean and the mighty and majestic Redwood National Park. Myself, Stacee, the hubby, Keith along with our 5 berner kids, all live and play on a grassy acre of property. Come visit, you're all welcome :)
We first fell in love with this amazing breed in 2007 shortly after losing my boy big Jake, a long haired rottweiler (I think), to cancer. After stumbling upon a TV program called Dogs 101, that happened to be show casing the Bernese Mountain Dog (BMD) on that particular day (I have shared a link to that specific program below if you are interested in watching) I did some research on this amazing breed and determined that this was the next beloved pet for our family but little did I know just how much I would fall in love with them. In 2009 we found a wonderful breeder out of Indiana, USA who has been a fabulous mentor through the years, and that is where we got our very first berner girl, Baby Bear. Still to this day our first breeder helps us out on many many questions and anything berner related, she is quite knowledgeable and I am truly indebted to her for life. This is where my love affair with Bernese Mountain Dogs began ..
We are an extremely small, family (hobby) breeder with a few exceptional dogs, including European imports. I have taken the time and studies to complete a wonderfully, insightful, educational course through Animal Care Technologies and became a Certified Breeder through the Veterinary Counsel of Breed Stewardship. I am also a member of Good Dog, which provides breeders with great educational material. I believe it is time for a new approach to dog breeding, to have a better understanding of biology, health values, longevity and suitable temperaments. We need to get the best out of our companion dogs.
Unfortunately in breeding, even our best efforts sometimes are not the best match for our selected breeding stock so we will, from time to time, look outside of our own kennels for a better match or stud dog from another fellow REPUTABLE breeder, that follows the same rigorous and extremely thorough health screenings as we do.
THE BOYS ARE PICKED EXCLUSIVELY FOR EACH GIRL BASED ON THE STRENGTHS AND THE WEAKNESSES OF THE PAIR. What we are looking for in our breeding program and pedigree is, excellent health history with long life spans (longevity), we prefer traditional markings, the big bear Berner heads, strong bone, and dependable, gentle temperaments.
All of our dogs are raised in a home environment which means just that, IN OUR HOME, not our garage, basement or an outside kennel.
Baby Bear Bernese is not a "kennel" in the physical aspect, our dogs play on grass not kennel runs, live indoors with us, and lay on the carpeting, vinyl flooring, tile, and furniture. We take great pride in our canine companions and that is why all of our dogs are registered through AKC (American Kennel Club) and their Foreign Kennel Clubs of their birth place. Our dogs reflect the Classic Berner type who conform to the breed standard.
